2008 chevrolet hhr review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Retrowagen gets more performance. introductionthe chevrolet hhr is a car-based retro-wagon that celebrates its chevy heritage with styling inspired by the iconic 1949 suburban. Hhr stands for heritage high roof, a reference to the early high-roofed suburbans and panel trucks that inspired the design of the hhr.  based on the same platform as the chevrolet cobalt, the hhr was first launched as a 2006 model. The hhr competes most closely with the chrysler pt cruiser, but also with honda element, ford escape, and jeep liberty.  for 2008, the hhr lineup gets a new high-performance ss model.  we found the chevy hhr fun to drive. It isn't a sports car, but it's nimble and we were pleased with its acceleration. The hhr feels more responsive than its horsepower, torque, and transmission ratio numbers suggest. Plus, it gets decent fuel economy.  the hhr panel van features smooth, windowless side panels and rear cargo doors with no handles. The rear cargo doors open via an instrument panel button. While it’s more spartan inside and provides seating for only two, the panel best exemplifies the early suburban heritage.  the hhr ss is the most fun to drive, launching quickly off the line and offering sharp handling. On an autocross circuit, we found it handled like a sports car.  the hhr interior isn't as functional as we'd like, however. And the base cloth fabric left us wishing we'd ordered the optional leather.  the chevrolet hhr remains relatively unchanged for 2007 with the exception of slightly more powerful engines and a few additional new color choices. New exterior color options for 2007 include imperial blue metallic and golden teal metallic; a new interior color option is ebony. lineupthe 2008 chevy hhr comes in three distinctively different configurations: hhr, hhr panel, and the new hhr ss. It comes in several trim levels, including the base ls and two lt grades. Stabilitrak electronic stability control is now standard across the entire hhr model range. walkaroundwe like the retrospective styling treatment served up by the hhr across the model range. The closest comparison to the chevy hhr is the chrysler pt cruiser. Both fill a respective need in their individual camps.  the rounded nose of the hhr is not unlike chevy's ssr, which also reflects the brand's truck heritage. The hhr's fenders are well defined with flat side wheel well openings contrasting favorably with the vehicle's many curved, contemporary sculpted surfaces. Front and rear bumpers and fog lamps are integrated into seamless fascia, with integrated running boards offering another nostalgic touch. The flush glass all around, including the windshield is a nice touch, as are the headlights surrounded by body panels in old school fashion. The tail light treatment consists of two round vertically stacked lenses on each side. The large, prominent grille is chrome, (except on the ss model), and appears much like that of the 1949 suburban.  front and rear bumpers are molded from composite material, integrated as part of their respective fascia. It provides lots of room and functionality without being boxy. When viewed from a distance, the hhr looks larger than it really is. Examined closely, it's compact. The cargo doors open wide enabling cargo access from both sides of the vehicle, as well as from the rear lift gate. The cargo doors are smooth and don’t have external handles; they are opened via a dashboard release button or the remote keyless entry fob. The large, continuous area created by the windowless cargo doors and rear panels is ideal for business logos, advertising or personalization. Side visibility is obviously limited due to the solid sides without windows; one must rely primarily on mirrors for backing maneuvers. The smooth, windowless sides on the panel give it a cleaner, retro, more hot rod look than the standard models. The lack of windows adds security for contents inside.  the hhr ss sits 6 mm lower than it stable mates, but sports extended front and rear fascias that give it the appearance of riding much lower. The new front fascia features an air-dam design with integrated fog lights, and the chrome surround grille comes with mesh-style upper and lower grille inserts. The new rear fascia provides a cutout for single bright exhaust tip. New rocker moldings resemble accentuated running boards. Out back, a rear spoiler is mounted above rear glass. Body-color door handles, mirror caps and rear license plate surround, along with ss badging on the front doors and rear lift gate further differentiate the ss from its stable mates. interiorinside, the chevy hhr provides for the most part, comfortable and functional surroundings. Speaking of headroom, there isn't a lot of it, in spite of the high roof. Also, the door lock button is positioned so that it interferes in driving and resting one's left arm on the window sill, a traditional and nostalgic pose.  cubby storage is limited. There's a handy flip-up compartment on top of the dash and a small glovebox. The rear provides one cupholder and small door pockets. The rear cargo floor flips up to reveal a five-inch-deep tray useful for storage. The rear lift gate is one piece, and raises easily.  solid rear quarter panels are available in place of the windows on all five-passenger models (via a window delete option).  the hhr panel provides seating for two and a large, flat cargo floor, with tie-down points located strategically on the floor with available, floor mats that allow for easier movement of cargo. The hhr panel features a flat load floor featuring a rubberized floor that provides utility and functionality for commercial or lifestyle activities.  the hhr panel cargo area features a standard auxiliary power outlet, as well as a 40-amp auxiliary power connector to provide service for a variety of specialty equipment needs. Two large, storage compartments, with a lockable option, are located forward under the cargo floor (in place of the rear seats in the passenger models). The compartments offer security for things such as computer equipment, flashlights, service manuals and other valuables.  the hhr ss features a special interior with ss-embroidered sport seats with inserts, a specific gauge cluster, an a-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge and a new shifter arrangement. Three interior color combinations are available: ebony, light gray and victory red. A special gm performance driver’s seat, providing added lateral support and spirited driving comfort is optional and we think it's a must. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter ecotec (an upgrade that comes as part of the 2lt package) is an impressive and versatile engine. The torque peak figure at such high rpm suggests that the low-rpm pulling power might be weak, but quite to the contrary, it's not. We drive up a steep, slow hill every day, and the hhr plugged up the hill like a tractor, with no shifting-down or searching by the automatic transmission. 2013 volkswagen beetle review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Convertible joins sleek, new lineup. introductionthe volkswagen beetle was completely redesigned for 2012. For 2013, beetle convertible joins the lineup.  as with the coupe, the 2013 beetle convertible is longer, lower and wider than the new beetle, which is what we called the old one that was phased out after the 2010 model year. It feels like a capsule inside than it did before.  front legroom is plentiful, but the beetle coupe's rear seat has just 31. 4 inches of legroom, which is 1. 9 inches less than the subcompact toyota yaris, on a wheelbase that's 1. 1 inches longer. Still, two adult passengers will fit back there; they just sit rather upright.  the rear hatch area of the beetle coupe is spacious at 15. 4 cubic feet. With the rear seat folded, the coupe has nearly 30 cubic feet of cargo space, and the high-swinging hatchback enables giant things to fit inside, making the coupe handy for hauling. The beetle convertible has a trunk with only 7. 1 cubic feet of space.  the beetle seats and trim are neat but not fancy. The bucket seats are simple and comfortable, with excellent bolstering.  instrumentation is so clean it's memorable for its rarity. In the center of the big clear speedometer there's a multi-function digital display, accessed with a flick of the driver's right thumb, scrolling a small wheel on the steering wheel. It makes for safe driving.  the 2. 5-liter inline five-cylinder engine, with an iron block and dual overhead cams, carries on, delivering 170 horsepower. Torque is 177 pound-feet at 4250 rpm. Acceleration with the 2. 5-liter engine is adequate, and 75 mph on the freeway is smooth and mostly effortless.  a 5-speed manual gearbox is standard, with a 6-speed automatic transmission optional. The automatic did not wow us. The automatic has manual shift capability, but it's done with side-to-side movements using the lever. It's better than nothing, but it's not racy. The manual gearbox is satisfying and gives the car pep when accelerating. We recommend the manual.  a 2. 0-liter turbo model is also available that comes with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automated manual that vw calls a dsg for direct shift gearbox. The turbo also has sportier suspension tuning. The 2. 0-liter turbocharged engine makes 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque at a low 1700 rpm, and it gets about the same fuel mileage as the 2. 5-liter engine although on more expensive premium gasoline. It's hot, with acceleration not far behind a mini cooper s.  also available is the tdi turbocharged direct-injection diesel engine, which delivers jaw-dropping torque and fuel mileage on the far side of 40 mpg. The 2. 0-liter turbodiesel delivers 236 pound-feet of torque. The tdi engine has been used successfully for some time in the golf and jetta models and is well-proven. It's clean and runs quietly.  coupe or convertible, the beetle chassis is rigid and the body solid, with subframes front and rear, supporting the suspensions. Vw did a lot of work to make the convertible impressively rigid.  the base coupe uses a torsion beam rear suspension, but the beetle turbo and all convertibles use a more sophisticated multi-link, for a higher threshold of cornering. The freeway ride in the base coupe doesn't suffer for the torsion beam. It's comfortable and consistent. Potholes don't hurt, but rough pavement can make the rear end of the coupe want to dance. The other models are more composed over rough pavement. lineupthe 2013 beetle model lineup includes 2. 5l, turbo and tdi models in coupe and convertible body styles with additional models defined by extra equipment. Special edition 1950s, '60s and '70s models are also available in the convertible lineup. The base engine is a 170-horsepower 2. 5-liter 5-cylinder. Turbos get a 200-horsepower 2. 0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. The turbo convertible also gets a '60s edition model 32,395) with the navigation system, leather upholstery, 6-speed automated-manual transmission, center console, keyless access and starting, fender sound system, satellite and hd radio, and steering-wheel audio controls.  the tdi coupe 23,295) and convertible 27,895) add to the 2. 5l steering-wheel audio controls, center console, keyless access and starting, and satellite radio. The convertible also gets hd radio. Like the other models, the tdi is offered with additional equipment. The coupe comes as the tdi sunroof and tdi sunroof/sound/navigation models, while the convertible adds only the tdi sound/navigation model.  safety equipment on the coupe includes dual front airbags, front side airbags, antilock disc brakes, brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control, a tire-pressure monitor, and volkswagen's advanced intelligent crash response system that shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and switches on the hazard lights under some crash situations. The convertible also adds automatic pop-up roll bars. It's not quite as cute and feminine, but it is just as identifiable as it's ever been. The coupe's coefficient of drag is 0. 37, a good number that still lags behind some competitors, and reveals the legacy of a round bug. The beetle convertible comes in at a close 0. 38 cd. The 2012 honda civic, by comparison, slips in under 0. 32. (a lower number is better.)  looking head-on at the beetle, it's wide and chubby enough that the lines are actually horizontal. A narrow black mouth under the bumper spans the face like a pinched grin, under perky headlamps like eyes, and a hood seam that seems to define a wide nose, having one chrome nostril with vw in it.  at profile, the good-looking roofline is like a stylish tight arc, reminiscent of the 2005 concept car called the ragster, which had the look of a chopped-top hot rod.  the wheel cutouts are perfect semi-circles dropping down toward the pavement. In contrast to the smooth curves of sheet metal everywhere else, the fender flares have squared edges, offering contrasting definition to the shape.  the beetle coupe might be called a hatchback. The rear gate is massive. Vw had to make no compromises to the car's shape for the utility of cargo loading. When the hatch is closed, it flows invisibly into the car's roundness.  the convertible, on the other hand, has a trunk that sits below the hold for the convertible soft top. The top opens in just 9. 5 seconds and closing in 11 at speeds up to 31 mph. It's like the old bug, in a welcome way.  volkswagen does gauges well, and the beetle's are super clean. There's a big speedometer in the center, insanely optimistic at 160 mph, with organic white numbers and red needles. American motors designed and built some of the most fuel-efficient, best-styled, and well-made cars of the 1950’s and 60’s. Their compact cars (for the time) helped amc to become a real contender against the big 3. In 1961, the rambler ranked in third place among domestic automobile sales. In 1962, amc took a leadership role with safer brake systems in all ramblers, featuring twin-circuit brakes, a design offered by only a few cars at that time. The popularity of the compact-sized classic continued in the face of a dozen new competitors, making them a real trendsetter. Sales of the 1962 model year classics increased by over 56,000 in the first six months compared to the same period in 1961. A popular mechanics nationwide survey of owners that had driven a total of 1,227,553 miles revealed that the rambler is likeable, easy handling, providing stability and comfortable, a roomy ride with low-cost operation. Flaws included inadequate power and poor workmanship. Even motor trend magazine named it their “car of the year” for 1963. There’s no secret that the rambler has it’s own cult following, and we have one of the most original survivors out there, right here at evolve motors! This ol rambler’s got more patina than the statue of liberty. It’s literally a running, driving tribute to the 60’s. What family didn’t have a rambler wagon sitting in the driveway? The exterior is pretty raw. In fact, with visual rust all over, the only real “problem” area is in the small corner of the passenger side floorboard, near where the floor meets the kick panel. Other than that small spot, the car’s tins and metals throughout are surprisingly solid. This car was driven, and loved daily up until the day we brought it up here. When we loaded her up, the owner had a small twinkle in his eye (we won’t call it a tear), as he beamed with nostalgia one last time. The car shows absolutely no signs of body damage or repair over the years, as it sits in it’s original two tone blue and white paint job. The patina is absolutely perfect on it, not too much, not too little, and evenly spread throughout. This is the look a lot of guys are going for these days. I just picture this thing with a v-8 transplant, a set of old school cragar wheels, hitting the open highway with a car load of people. Drive it, restore it, or hot rod it. The interior is mostly in good condition, aside from some obvious wear and tear on the driver’s seat. An upholstery specialist could repair that in half a day and have the interior looking like new. The dash is super clean, as is the headliner and all of the glass throughout the car. Again, we note the only major flaw of this entire ride is the passenger floorboard where the rust has gotten through the floor pan. The trunk is amazing. Pull back the carpet in the trunk area, and see the original steel and paint looking like it just rolled off the factory line. The original spare is still intact, along with the correct tire iron. Has run 12. 9 at the track with drag radials. This was mostly street driven an has good manors in traffic. The wholedrivetrain has approx 10,000 miles. Clean, rustfree under body. Real nicerepaint several years ago and retains all the stock decals. All the bottom edgeshave no bubbles. Good, straight body, all panel gaps look great. No evidence ofleaks from the t-tops. All weather stripping in good condition. Niceoriginal interior. One little one inch wearspot on drivers seat base, other than that real nice. Minor headliner sag in therear. It's handsomely designed and has world-class fit and finish. From crankshaft to door handles, everything operates with fine precision and the promise of long-lasting service.  the dodge charger was redesigned for the 2011 model year, and there are no significant changes for the 2012 charger except that a new 2012 dodge charger srt8 has been added to the model lineup. The 2012 charger is the second year of the second generation of the modern charger. The first generation ran 2006-2010. The original was launched as a '66. The general lee bo and luke duke drove was a '69.  from the outside, this second-generation charger looks a lot like an older rendering of the american sedan, but that appearance is misleading. The retro look is a self-confident exercise in sinuous american styling.  the interior, however, is anything but old style. The term 'crossover vehicle' has been thrown around a lot the last couple years, meant to apply to those suvs that are leaning in the direction of cars and/or minivans. But the tag is too vague to mean much. Suddenly, with the new dodge magnum, it fits. This is the car that has the capability to wean the country off of suvs. Its bold hot-rod lines might scare people away, but its utility can't be denied. It's a full-size american car with spacious cargo capacity and available all-wheel drive. And it's engineered for safety. It's got image and utility. If that isn't what people want when they buy an suv, what do they want?  plus, it gets better gas mileage than full-size suvs. The magnum comes standard with a 190-horsepower double-overhead-cam v6 that gets 21-28 miles per gallon, at a stunning base price of $22,495 including destination. In fact, it excels in all those areas. lineupthree dodge magnum models are available. The se 21,870) is nicely equipped for its price. The r/t adds to the sxt features a leather interior, bigger and beefier brakes, 18-inch polished aluminum wheels, dual exhausts, foglights, and a boston acoustics premium six-speaker sound system with a 288-watt digital amplifier.  optional equipment includes a power passenger seat, heated front seats, dual zone automatic climate control, electronic vehicle information center, electrochromic rearview mirror, front and rear air curtains, air filtration, self-sealing tires, hands-free cellphone capability, power adjustable pedals, gps navigation system with integrated six-disc cd/mp3 player, sirius satellite radio, sunroof and load-leveling shocks. walkaroundthe styling of the magnum is so distinctive that a picture will say far more than words can. It's a long, low, beefy station wagon on a wide track with big bold grille and a chopped top. It would be an understatement to say the magnum has presence. And that's what it is: a crossover between sports car and station wagon. More accurately, the dodge magnum is a crossover between muscle car and station wagon. The headlamp units are a nice integrated wedge shape. We like them better than those on the new chrysler 300, the magnum's sister car, which try harder to be retro. The air dam/bumper cover wraps up under the headlamps and grille, and looks impressively beefy and functional.  from the side, the magnum looks like it could be rolled onto the floor of a hot rod show. The wheel cutouts are profound, and especially imposing with the 18-inch 10-spoke wheels on the rt. But a bigger visual effect is created by the tinted glass and roofline sloping back and pinching the rear window. This serves an innovative purpose. The one-piece liftgate is hinged about two feet up into the roof, providing a vast and liberating opening to the cargo area. Dodge lists the cargo capacity as 27. 2 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 71. 6 cubic feet with them down, while the epa interior volume indicates 133. 1 cubic feet. We did and the cargo area looks wider, flatter, longer and easier to access than most suvs. There was room to do so, only 10 percent less than in the front seat, according to the sae volume index. The 60/40 split rear seat holds three, but a wide armrest with cupholders drops down to make it more comfortable for two. The center stack was clean and tidy in black, with buttons that were easy to click and knobs where knobs should be, for the climate control and radio. The console compartment is decent sized, and contains practical coinholders. There's also a sunglasses holder within the driver's reach. And speaking of specialized holders, the cargo area includes a nook designed for holding a one-gallon milk jug, and grocery bags.  but mostly the magnum feels great from the driver's seat, which is firm and comfortable. With a similar long hood, and identical wheelbase, for some reason, from behind the wheel the magnum doesn't feel as big as the chrysler 300. driving impressionthe dodge magnum was a car we didn't want to stop driving. All that horsepower, all that torque, great tight handling, solid comfortable ride, very enjoyable instrument panel and steering wheel and seats.  the five-speed automatic transmission, designed by mercedes, upshifted sharply and smoothly, but even in the autostick mode it sometimes upshifted before we wanted it to. The engine felt easily underworked at that speed. Numbers and charts notwithstanding, this is an engine that feels like it wants to rev. Although by the same token, the 340 horsepower peaks at just 5000 rpm, so revving past 5500 would seem to be unnecessary. It was just so much fun. We should add that we were testing a pre-production magnum, and it's possible that showroom models may be programmed to shift at 5800, not 5500.  even with all that power and torque, the acceleration isn't neck-snapping; the magnum has a very tall final drive ratio of 2. 82, which is great for gas mileage and quiet running, but tempers acceleration. There were times it felt like it had 340 horsepower, and times it didn't. There were more times that it didn't feel like it had 390 pound-feet of torque, which might be because the torque peaks at a relatively high level, 4000 rpm. With torque peaking at 4000 and horsepower peaking at 5000, there's a relatively small area of maximum happy performance for such a big engine. We're not complaining, merely lamenting what could be. And no doubt will, with aftermarket tuners.  they'll also find grippier tires for the magnum. As the tires lost their limited bite, the esp cut the throttle on us. With grippier tires it's unlikely that intrusion would occur. This car warrants sport or high-performance tires, though they may not last as long or work as well in the winter.  we also felt the front wheels bouncing at times, which was the only blemish on an otherwise grea. Visually, the fenders are separate elements from the engine bay, a situation emphasized by a tight rectangular grille that seems to sit comfortably atop the wider bumper slits below. Headlights are compact and focused.  grille, bumpers, and fog light surrounds are all new for 2009. Most noticeable are the new, vertical brake scoops, lined with black ribs, that bite into the bumper beneath the headlights, where the fog lights used to be. (fog lights nestle into these scoops on sport models.) more subtle is the way the main grille now integrates better with the cooling slit just beneath it, while the formerly full-width slit beneath that has been replaced by three smaller slots.  limiteds have a look all their own, with a single, deep, trapezoidal grille opening bolding bisected by a body-color horizontal bar with a large, chrome toyota world-t badge at its center. A pseudo-skid plate wraps up from the bottom, leaving no room for additional lower air intakes. Tubular nacelles supporting the fog lights replace the brake scoops of base and sport models. None of these changes, fortunately, has affected the rav4's low coefficient of drag.  alloy wheels have five spokes on sport, six on limited. A wide track gives the rav4 a solid stance visually, while resisting rollovers in emergency maneuvers.  the side view is oblong, a mix of boxy and oval, the better to accommodate that third-row seat. The fat, triangular c-pillar with the taillight at its base reminds us of the subaru tribeca, a larger, seven-passenger suv priced a notch or two above the rav4. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the rav4's doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. The taillights are new for 2009, as is the bumper itself, but the changes here are more subtle than at the front. Taillights are positioned high on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, and doesn't dip below the bumper line. The rear license plate, sunk into the lower left side of the swing-gate below the handle, visually balances the spare. The sport model's spoiler hangs conspicuously off the top edge of the roof.  the new sport appearance package for 2009 eliminates the spare entirely, and centers the license plate up high beneath a bright metal strip that's just beneath another world-t badge that is just under the window. A bulge low down on the tailgate fills in the step in the standard bumper when the tailgate is closed. A handle on the left side still betrays the gate's swing-open design, but in spite of this the overall look with the sport appearance package is remarkably more car-like, more station wagon than suv. interiorinside, the 2009 rav4 is as good as ever, which is to say functional if a bit eccentric in style.  placement of the gauges will be familiar to anyone who has owned a previous rav4. The position and function of the controls populating the center stack is virtually the same as it has always been, which means very good; that also applies to the arrangement of the hand brake and the shift lever. The current dash is sharply split by a horizontal gash running the width of the car. About the only plus we found in this garish feature is a bi-level glove box, with an upper bin covered by a retracting lid and a lower bin fitted with a traditional, bottom-hinged cover.  materials are high quality. The standard seat fabric has been upgraded for 2009. Fit and finish is toyota grade, which means excellent. All three trim levels share the same motif, with contrasting but complementary colors and brushed metallic trim elements around the stereo and climate controls, surrounding the shift gate and swooping around the door handles. The standard side-curtain airbags still allow a passenger assist grip, which folds down.
